Large Family Garden
Blackheath SE3
In this large family garden, our brief was to accommodate the play requirements of a range of children, from sporty teenagers to little ones whose ideal afternoon was spent in a sandpit. Our clients also wished to incorporate two sculptures, as well as a place to entertain their friends.
The bold layout was defined with curved Yew hedges that divided the play area from the more formal part of the garden. Not only do the hedges form a backdrop to a water feature, but they also frame tantalising glimpses into the play spaces beyond. Graphic sweeps of textured grasses and bold, colourful perennials surround a large lawn and stone dining terrace. Beneath the bespoke play structure artificial lawn was chosen as an all-season, sports surface where shady conditions would not permit real grass to thrive.
Close to the house, an intimate, shady courtyard space was designed with a sculpture by Michael Speller as the centerpiece so that it can be viewed from the kitchen and dining room.
